News and projects: the first 6 months of Eurotest

The past semester was one that saw a lot of changes and news at Eurotest Laboratori. We spoke to the management team to find out a bit more about the company’s main projects at the present.

“We are very pleased with the first semester this year”, commented Stefano Bersanetti, the company’s Managing Director, “both due to the economic results, fruit of the efforts made throughout 2015, and in terms of our market presence, which is being further consolidated through important partnerships with certification bodies, such as UL. These results prove the value of our strategic decisions, aimed at strengthening our core business in the product certification sector, regarding both electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety, as well as renewable energy. In the latter sector we are still one of the few laboratories able to test photovoltaic modules: in fact, we have just officially received from Accredia an extension to cover the new IEC61215:2016 series, making us one of the few companies to currently have European accreditation for such standards.”

Eurotest therefore continues to represent a partner that can offer a complete range of services to all companies operating on international markets, where legislative requirements are often complex and change from country to country. “Our list of accreditations also includes the standards relating to air-conditioning and commercial refrigeration units”, explained Andrea Trevisan, Sales&Marketing Manager, “allowing us to meet the needs of customers in this industry, many of whom are located in the Triveneto area. This is why we have also extended our scope of participation to include the UL Third Party Test Data Program (TPTDP), adding standard UL 471, relating specifically to that sector. Moreover, in order to continually improve our services, the list of accredited tests has been extended to cover category III for products such as static converters and uninterruptible power supplies: when the tests cannot be performed in the lab for space or power reasons, we can carry out the same accredited tests at our customers’ own sites”.

From a technical point of view, significant investments were made in the first part of the year. “We completed the adaptation of our semi-anechoic chamber”, said Pierpaolo Amadori, Laboratory Technical Manager, “with the purchase of the brand-new EMI ESW26 receiver by Rohde&Schwarz, used to conduct measurements up to 26 GHz. We can therefore complete our offering of services with Directive 2014/53/UE, also known as RED (Radio Equipment Device), responding to the needs of a market in which the focus is increasingly on technology and connectivity”.

What are the prospects for the second part of the year? “The figures up until now confirm the positive trend of the first part of the year”, Bersanetti stated, “however we are already looking to the future, in particular technological innovation. Over recent weeks we have in fact been testing a new thermal radiometry service with several customers, a service we are adopting with the help of an important partnership established a few years ago with Broadband Beach, a company specialising in advanced ICT and IP technology. Our proposal is arousing a lot of interest, above all among companies that need to guarantee business continuity and above all safety in the working environments where risks exist. In this case too we act as partners for the choice of the hardware, configuration and installation, as well as service and maintenance once the system is up and running. We are convinced that many companies will soon implement diagnostic systems based on thermal radiometry.” 

The new 61215:2016 for the photovoltaic modules certification

In March 2016, the new IEC 61215 standard on the certification of photovoltaic panels came into force. The previous standard, IEC 61215:2005, was concurrently withdrawn and replaced by standards IEC 61215-1, IEC 61215-2 and IEC 61215-1-1.

The Italian Electrotechnical Committee (CEI) has yet to approximate the new standard.

These are the main changes:

  1. The criterion for verifying conformity to the standard requires testing of power compared to the rated data, in addition to the typical evaluation of power degradation at the end of testing.
  2. A new power stabilisation test (MQT 19) has been added
  3. The NOCT (nominal operating cell temperature) test has been replaced by the new NMOT (nominal module operating temperature) test
  4. Significant modifications have been made regarding measurement of temperature coefficients
  5. Improvements have been made to the Hot Spot testing methods
  6. Requirements regarding the electrical values to be applied to the modules during climatic testing have been modified
  7. The termination strength test has been modified significantly.

Eurotest, just like all other laboratories, is awaiting further information from Accredia regarding the procedure for accreditation to the new standard.

Eurotest also offers accredited external electroluminescence tests.

Electroluminescence is the only type of test that can identify and analyse defects on photovoltaic panels that are not visible to the naked eye (breakages, cracks, microscopic fractures on cells and PID).

Eurotest recognised by ACAE-LOVAG


In June 2015, Eurotest Laboratori was officially recognised as a Qualified laboratory (registration code IT01) by ACAE (Italian Association for the Certification of Electrical and Electronic Equipment), a founding member of LOVAG (Low Voltage Agreement Group), a European body whose fundamental aim is the harmonisation of testing and certification of industrial low voltage equipment.

For Eurotest, this represents the beginning of an important partnership, with the objective of providing our customers not only conventional laboratory services, but also leading quality certification, something that is often needed to stand out on the European and global markets.
